Mid-market reference rates, refreshed 2026-08-27 — the midpoint between buy and sell, shown for comparison. It is not a quote: no provider, including us, transacts at mid. What you should compare is each provider's distance from it — banks typically sit 2–4% away on a transfer; our rates page shows how we price against it.

The number that matters is the distance from mid

A converter's job is not to tell you what you will get — no reference rate can promise that — it is to give you the benchmark. When a bank offers to convert CAD, the offer sits some distance from the mid-market rate, typically 2–4% on a transfer, and that distance is the real price of the conversion, whatever the fee line says. Canadians have become expert at working around it — there is an entire brokerage manoeuvre devoted to dodging CAD/USD spreads. A simpler route is a provider that prices close to mid and says so in writing: our rates page shows current benchmarks, and the OTC desk prices larger tickets from 8 bps.

Where do these CAD rates come from?

A daily snapshot of mid-market reference rates sourced from Alpha Vantage, refreshed each morning UTC — the same source as our rates page. USD/CAD is taken directly; every other pair is derived through the USD leg. The refresh date is shown next to every rate on this page.

What is a mid-market rate?

The midpoint between the buy and sell price of a currency pair — the rate you see on financial news. Nobody transacts at mid, including us: every provider prices some distance from it. The mid is the honest benchmark to measure that distance against, which is exactly what this converter is for.

Why is the amount my bank offers different?

Banks typically price retail and business FX 2–4% away from mid on a transfer, sometimes with a wire fee on top. The gap between this page and your bank quote is that spread, made visible. Our rates page shows how we price against the same benchmark.

Can I trade at the rate shown here?

No — it is a reference rate, at most a day old, not a quote. For an executable rate on real volume, talk to the desk: we quote in writing within one business day, and for larger tickets the OTC desk prices from 8 bps.
