Foreign Currency Accounts for Canadian Businesses: What to Look For
A foreign currency account lets a Canadian business hold, collect and pay in currencies other than CAD without forced conversion on every transaction. This guide covers when you need one, what to look for, and how KwiikPay's GBP/EUR/USD accounts work.
A foreign currency account lets a Canadian business hold, collect and pay in currencies other than CAD — most commonly USD, EUR and GBP — without being force-converted on every transaction. You convert when you choose to, at a rate you can see, instead of absorbing a retail spread on each inbound payment.
When a Canadian business needs one
- You invoice in USD, EUR or GBP. Holding the currency avoids double conversion — once when you receive, again when you pay a supplier in the same currency.
- You pay international suppliers or contractors. Paying from a same-currency balance is cheaper and faster than converting per payment.
- Your revenue and costs are in different currencies. A multi-currency balance sheet lets you time conversions instead of taking whatever rate applies on the day.
- You settle with crypto-native counterparties. Some businesses also want stablecoin settlement legs (USDC/USDT/EURC) next to their fiat accounts.
What to look for
- Named accounts, not pooled references. Your name on the account details matters to counterparties and to reconciliation.
- The spread, shown before you convert. If a provider cannot show you the FX margin before you confirm, you cannot price it.
- Corridor coverage that matches your flow. Coverage claims are cheap; ask for your specific corridors in writing.
- A precise regulatory story. In Canada, look the provider up on the public FINTRAC MSB Registry rather than accepting a logo. A provider loose with the easy, checkable claim tends not to be more careful with the hard ones.
- Safeguarding disclosure. A non-bank provider should tell you plainly how client funds are held and that they are not CDIC-insured.

FAQs
What is a foreign currency account?
An account that holds a currency other than your domestic one — for a Canadian business, typically USD, EUR or GBP. It lets you collect revenue and pay suppliers in the same currency, so you convert only when you choose to, at a rate you can see, instead of being force-converted on every transaction.
Why not just use my bank's USD account?
Canadian banks offer USD accounts, and for simple flows they work. Businesses tend to look further when they need EUR or GBP as well, want wholesale FX rather than retail spreads, need to pay out across many corridors, or want settlement options their bank does not offer. Compare total cost on your actual flow, not the headline account fee.
Is KwiikPay a bank?
No. KwiikPay is a trading name of KWP Finance Limited, registered with FINTRAC as a money services business (C100000942) and with the Bank of Canada as a payment service provider under the Retail Payment Activities Act. Client funds are safeguarded and are not covered by CDIC deposit insurance — we state that plainly.
Which currencies can I hold?
Named virtual accounts in GBP, EUR and USD, with conversion between 40+ currencies at wholesale rates, the spread shown before you confirm. Payouts reach 30+ corridors and 80+ countries.
How fast is onboarding?
It depends on your business profile. Every account goes through KYB and screening before it opens; higher-risk profiles route through enhanced due diligence, which takes longer. We tell you what we need up front and keep you updated.
