IBAN checker

Validate an IBAN's structure before you send money to it. Country code, length and checksum, checked in your browser — nothing you type is sent anywhere.

What a pass here actually means

An IBAN has three checkable properties: a real country code, the registered length for that country, and two check digits computed from the whole number (the ISO 13616 mod-97 rule). This tool verifies all three. What no checker can verify is whether the account exists and who holds it — that is knowable only to the receiving bank. So use a pass here to catch typos and truncations before a payment bounces, and confirm the beneficiary itself against their own documents.

The Canada question

Canada does not use IBANs — and neither do the US, Australia or India. A Canadian account is addressed by transit, institution and account number, with a SWIFT/BIC for anything cross-border. When a European counterparty insists on an IBAN, a Canadian business has two honest answers: send those details instead, or hold a named virtual IBAN so European customers can pay a local-format account in the company's own name.

What does this IBAN checker validate?

Structure only: the country code, the expected length for registered IBAN countries, and the ISO 13616 mod-97 checksum. A pass means the number is well-formed — it does not prove the account exists or who holds it. Only the receiving bank knows that.

Does Canada use IBANs?

No. Canadian accounts are addressed by a 5-digit transit number, a 3-digit institution number and an account number — plus a SWIFT/BIC for cross-border payments. If a European counterparty asks a Canadian business for an IBAN, that combination is the answer. Canadian businesses that want European customers to pay a local-format account use a virtual IBAN instead.

Why does a valid-looking IBAN fail the checksum?

Usually one mistyped or transposed character — the two check digits after the country code are computed from the entire number, so any single error breaks them. Re-copy the IBAN from the source document rather than fixing it by eye.

Is the IBAN I type stored anywhere?

No. The validation runs entirely in your browser; nothing you type is transmitted to us or to anyone else.
